South West Murcia
South West Murcia
The south-west area of Murcia broadly encompasses the coastal areas running from the edge of the Cartagena municipality and starting in Mazarron, through the Lorca municipality and on into Águilas, as well as the municipalities immediately inland from the coast which include Alhama de Murcia, Totana, Fuente Álamo, the Sierra Espuña regional park and Aledo.
There is a large selection of beaches on this coastline, with wild natural beaches and rocky coves, nudist beaches and long urban beaches, as well as sailing ports in Mazarrón and Águilas.
Further inland the Sierra Espuña regional park offers a huge range of activities including walking, cycling, caving, paragliding, horse riding, climbing, bungee jumping and environmental activities, and plenty of places to enjoy a day sightseeing.
The urbanisation is divided into four sectors, the A sector mainly offering detached villas of different sizes, some on quite sizeable plots, a medical centre, pharmacy and a commercial sector and is the most established of the four. This has been adopted by the local council and is also known as Los Palacios. The other 3 sectors are on the opposite side of the main carriageway, again with a commercial centre, post office and restaurants. B and C sectors also comprises mainly villas, as well as a small number of duplex properties and the D sector has a higher percentage of smaller properties and duplexes, with some villas.
The properties on this development are mainly compact detached villas with individual plots, some with pools. The urbanisation is well maintained and attractive, with an imposing entrance and gardens, as well as a clubhouse.
This is the last urbanisation developed by Polaris World and currently has 3000 properties, although originally had been designed to hold considerably more. These may, of course, be built once the economic situation improves. It has an imposing commercial centre and restaurants, a world class golf course with clubhouse, tennis and padel courts. Accommodation is centred in apartment blocks, around central communal swimming pools and is a popular family and holiday resort.
Hacienda del Álamo
A well maintained, low density resort set across a landscaped area, this offers a range of attractive detached villas and a “town centre” of apartments. The resort has an excellent golf course and beautiful club house, and was marketed as the most up-market golf resort in this area of the region.
Main holiday and residential areas in south-west Murcia
The Mazarrón municipality has the largest all-year round population of ex-pats in the region, due mainly to the Camposol urbanisation which has 7000 homes in total. The urbanisation is a good 10 minutes from the town of Mazarrón and then a further 5 minutes from the Puerto de Mazarrón, the port area, which has plenty of restaurants and attractive seafront. Mazarrón has over 30 beaches to choose from, with wild beaches, nudist beaches and long sandy urban beaches.
Alhama de Murcia
The municipality of Alhama de Murcia covers the flat plains which stretch inland from the coast, and then climbs up high into the Sierra Espuña regional park which is forested with pines and provides many opportunities for walking, cycling and leisure sports. The main holiday accommodation is in the Condado de Alhama urbanisation, but those looking to buy will find many rural properties in the agricultural areas surrounding the main town, which is a friendly and attractive town, and characterful properties in the Sierra Espuña.
An intensely agricultural area, Totana also includes the same geographical features as Alhama and is popular with expats who prefer the more exclusive rural residential urbanisations on the edge of the forest and in the grape growing agricultural areas surrounding Totana.
High up in the Sierra Espuña, this picturesque old hilltop town offers rural accommodation for those who prefer a quiet life within a mainly Spanish community. It can drop below freezing up in the Sierra Espuña in the winter.
Fuente Álamo is a farming town, surrounded by agricultural cultivation. The rural properties in the municipality are popular with expats seeking inexpensive, traditional accommodation, some on private plots and others in small hamlets, within a mainly Spanish community. The Hacienda del Álamo offers resort, up-market accommodation and is popular with foreign buyers.
Lorca and Águilas
Lorca is a vast municipality with limited coastal accommodation, much of the property rustic fincas and farmhouses. Águilas has some stunning beaches, and many of the residential developments popular with expats and holiday makers are on the outskirts of the town, spread along the coast.
